Meet your coaches

All of our instructors are active practitioners with years of experience both on the mats and in competition.

Marc Woolhead

He started BJJ in January 2014. Before joining Basement Martial Arts (the previous name of New Movement) as a white belt the following year. After years at elite level in squash, he found a new sport love in his life and hasn't looked back!

His favourite aspect of Jiu Jitsu is the sense of community we are building alongside being able to change someone life for the better through Jiu Jitsu. He loves having the ability to improve someone's game and also helping them move along this journey that he's been on for the last 11 years.

Sam Campbell

He started in 2011 in Luton with Icon BJJ, then came over to train with Basement in around 2015 as a blue belt. He likes teaching concepts that have wide application and seeing students get incrementally better at techniques. He particularly enjoys when they're doing something and they look over and make eye contact while applying something he's taught them, like the nod in Dark Knight Rises from Alfred to Bruce Wayne.

He strongly believes that Jiu Jitsu is for everyone, not just elite fit athletes. Regardless of anything, there's a niche for everyone and you can learn your own ways of doing things, modifying techniques to make them work for you.

George Moore

George started BJJ in 2021 alongside Ben Wallace, having grown up together they feel like brothers. He has two favourite aspects of BJJ. Firstly, no matter what sort of day you've had, you can step on the mats and all your problems disappear. Secondly, when you're trading back and forth with a training partner or put a new technique that you say (or got caught with) in to effect, it's the adrenaline and the exhileration of the session.

Also important is the focus that BJJ brings to the rest of your life, e.g. diet and nutrition become more important. You want to drive yourself forward and be the best you can be. Thinking about the future and your health/fitness as a driver, really helps make small changes that add up to a big difference.

Ben Wallace

After getting a black belt in Shotokan Karate, Ben started BJJ in 2021 with George Moore. He has the most fun submitting blue belts, but enjoys the endless opportunity to learn and progress more.

He dislikes the injuries that can come with BJJ so he's careful to coach in a way that can help others learn to avoid them, but loves seeing people use the techniques in sparring, especially on him. His main long term goal is to be in this sport for the long run, so avoiding injuries is crucial.

What is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu?

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) is a martial art, combat sport, and self-defense system that focuses on grappling, ground fighting, and submissions. Unlike striking-based martial arts, BJJ emphasizes technique and leverage, allowing a smaller or weaker person to defend themselves effectively against a larger opponent. It's often described as "human chess" because of the strategy, timing, and finesse involved.

BJJ traces its roots back to early 20th-century Japan, when judo and traditional jiu-jitsu were introduced to Brazil. Mitsuyo Maeda, a Japanese judoka and prizefighter, taught the art to a young Carlos Gracie. Carlos, along with his brothers - especially Hélio Gracie - adapted and refined the techniques, creating what would become Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

The Gracie family played a key role in developing and promoting BJJ throughout Brazil and eventually the world, leading to the formation of competitive schools, the rise of no-holds-barred tournaments, and the birth of modern mixed martial arts (MMA). Today, BJJ is practiced globally, with practitioners of all ages and backgrounds.

Why people train

People come to BJJ for all sorts of reasons - self-defense, fitness, competition, discipline, or simply the love of learning. It’s a journey that challenges both the mind and body, builds resilience, and fosters a strong sense of community. Progress is marked by a belt system, but every belt - from white to black - brings its own challenges and victories.

Whether you're a complete beginner or an experienced grappler, BJJ is a lifelong art with something to offer at every level.

"This is the third BJJ gym I’ve tried and I can truly say that I’ve found a gym that feels like family. Everyone is so friendly and supportive, and the coaches are so great at ensuring everyone is learning. They help you adapt the techniques to your specific situation or body type too. Can’t see me ever leaving this club."
